If you are looking for winter sun in a campsite full of fun and social activities, then you might like Camping Villasol in Benidorm. We stayed there for 9 nights in mid-March 2019 while we were waiting for some mail to arrive from the UK. It gave us plenty of time to check out the facilities of the campsite, and see what Benidorm and the surrounding areas had to offer. Here’s our review for Camping Villasol in Benidorm.

What’s good about the site?

Caravan club rally and activities – like to be sociable or keep busy? Maybe you are traveling on your own and like to meet new people. The activities team at Villasol will help you get out of your van with a range of social activities such as aqua gym, line dancing, Spanish lessons, petanque, quizzes and more. Villasol has just been added as a Caravan Club Rally for winter 2018 so there are plenty of Brits there and extra activities you can get involved with. You have no excuse to be bored on this site!

No dogs allowed – this could be a good thing or a bad thing. If you have a dog then you’ll have to camp elsewhere. If you have a nervous cat, like we do, being able to get on a campsite with no dogs is just marvelous. It usually leads to a better night’s sleep for everyone.

Swimming pools – a large outdoor swimming pool with lovely gardens, loungers and a bar. The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/04 and 30/10 (subject to weather conditions). A smaller heated indoor pool is available for the winter.

Large pitches – the pitches on the site are all a good size. Some of the pitches are more square and wide, and some of them are not quite so wide, but much deeper. Depending on the size of your motorhome or caravan, whether you have a large awning tent or how you want to position yourself, the square or the deeper pitch might suit you better.

You’ll have a chance to pick from the available free pitches when you arrive, so take the time to walk around and see which one you like the best. Pitches are on a light gravel and separated with low hedges. There are trees which grow in for the summer to provide more shade, but it’s open and sunny for the winter.

Access ways to the pitches are wide and maneuvering through the site is easy.

Mail delivery – need something sent from the UK? During our stay we had a parcel and a letter delivered. Parcels are kept for you in the office and letters are sorted into alphabetical slots outside reception.

ACSI card – for short stays you can save some money with an Acsi card out of season. The ACSI rate is €20 a night and it’s valid during low season, between 07-01-2019 – 16-04-2019, 22-04-2019 – 12-07-2019 and 01-09-2019 – 27-12-2019. The regular rates for a short stay are around €24 a night in low season. Substantial discounts are available for long stays.

Bathrooms and showers – the bathrooms are OK, and always clean. A little bit dated but we understand these are to be renovated this year. There is plenty of them, no queuing, and the showers are good and hot with good water pressure.

Supermarket – there is a well stocked supermarket on site with it’s own freshly baked bread and a good range of British foods. We found Custard Creams which made the hubby very happy. Also freezers stocked with familiar British Brands too. Prices are good.

Things that weren’t so great

The wifi – internet isn’t free on your pitches, although you can get internet installed and have your own login for longer stays. We used our own so can’t report on the site wifi, but heard it was €30 for 30 days.

Electricity – for stays longer than 30 days the electricity is metered. It’s expensive at €0.41 per kWh. If temperatures get down in the winter and you want to run the heating in your van, the cost for electricity can really add up. You might want to run your heating and fridge on gas.

The motorhome service point – we had to check twice at reception because we couldn’t find it! There is no fresh water or wastewater service on the pitches. Eventually, we tracked it down at the back of the site. It’s on a slope which is odd, there is a hose pipe to fill up with fresh water but you have to get a key from reception and pay a deposit. The wastewater point seems to be completely unusable – it’s a small drain in the middle of the road where you have to lift the lid but seeing the waste water pipe on motorhomes is on the side of the van, it’s not really possible to maneuver it over the drain.

Instead, fresh water is collected in a bucket (or watering can) from a tap at the end of each row and poured into the van every day to stay topped up. Wastewater is collected in a bucket under the van and disposed of daily at the chemical toilet disposal point, at the bathrooms. It’s OK and turns into a social activity as people queue each morning to fill up their buckets.

Things to do in the area

There is SO much to do in the Benidorm area that you need never be bored. Go to a show in one of the local hotels, watch sport in one of the bars, ballroom dance and meet a new partner, go on coach or bus trips to local attractions, catch live music in one of the many bars (we hear Elvis is good, but there is something for every taste), hang out on the beach, visit other resorts up and down the coast a short way, or enjoy some great walks.

We especially recommend:

Conclusion – would we go back?

Absolutely yes. It was a lively site, nice and big, closes enough to all the action but not so close that it was noisy. All the facilities you needed are on site, there are supermarkets, bars, restaurants and entertainment nearby, and a good activities program on site to keep you busy for a short or a long stay. There are a number of very long-stayers or permanent pitches but they aren’t overwhelming and the whole site has a friendly but relaxed feel.

We’d certainly consider coming back here for some winter sun next year.
